Thanks for your comment, Peter. Looks like I should check out Pantry, too. I'm always wondering whether I still have enough oatmeal to make granola or whether there's another bag of flour hiding in the water heater closet that I use as a pantry.

Thanks for the tips on kitchen apps. I too have the SeafoodWatch app and it is a very helpful guide to an issue which is a veritable minefield. And I will definitely download Ratio - it appeals to the mathematician in me!

I also use Pantry to organise my food shopping (and pet and cleaning supplies too), as I find the stock control side of it very handy. You can set your desired stock level of each item, which prevents inadvertent over-shopping and waste.

Having said that, I use Pantry because it is apparently unique in what it does, not because I love it as an app. It's rather cranky, and it's missing some features which would make this a killer app for a busy householder. For instance, it's not location-aware, which is crazy on a GPS-capable phone; it doesn't learn from my buying patterns (e.g. working out sensible maximum stock levels and reordering thresholds, based on shelf-life and usage); it doesn't read barcodes.

Maybe I'm asking for professional-level stock control in a humble shopping app. But if anyone does know another app which does all of this, I've love to hear about it!

Hi,

You've given me some great ideas about apps to purchase-thanks!

It's a shame you don't like MyShoppingLists as I can't live without it! It's got lots of options and can save you so much time at the grocery store one aisle names are stored. The updated versions that are released always deliver big improvements so why not give it another go?

Thanks again for the advice.

One of my favorite can't-live-without-it apps is MacGourmet, which is both a desktop application as well as an iPhone app that syncs to the desktop application–I'm never without my personal recipe collection. It also has built-in shopping lists and wine notes features.

I love Grocery Gadget for my shopping app. I'm quite sure it has saved my marriage on more than one occasion.

My husband put it on his Iphone as well. We now split the grocery store up by isles - he gets some and I get some. We then check off the items as we go. It's also very helpful when I send him to the grocery by himself - I just take photos of the items on the list so he knows which brands I prefer!

There is an app for everything it seems ;) Thanks for some good ideas - I have a few of them already and the others, well, I think a trip to iTunes is in store (of course with some cash back to justify the purchase *LOL*)
